Important Security Reminder: Spotting Suspicious & Phishing Emails

Dear Black Oak Mine Families and Staff,
We are reaching out to share a quick cybersecurity update. Recently, a few suspicious "phishing" and spam emails have been circulating that appear to come from school staff email addresses.
Please rest assured that our IT Director is actively monitoring our systems and addressing these incidents. However, spoofed or compromised email addresses are a common challenge, and staying vigilant together is our best defense.
How to Spot a Suspicious Email:
- Check the Sender's Full Address: Look beyond the displayed name to ensure the actual email address matches our official school district domain (@bomusd.org).
- Unusual Requests for Personal Data: District staff will never ask for passwords, Social Security numbers, or financial information via email. Furthermore, district staff are not allowed to send emails that are not directly connected to school business. We would never allow a mass email regarding an estate sale.
- Urgent or Threatening Tone: Phrases like "Immediate Action Required" or "Account Suspended" are often designed to make you act quickly before double-checking.
- Mismatched Links: Hover your cursor over links (without clicking) to preview the web address. If it looks unfamiliar or doesn't match the context, do not click it.
- Unexpected Attachments: Be cautious with unexpected files, especially zip files or documents asking you to enable macros.
- Off-Character Requests: If a colleague or staff member asks for something unusual—such as purchasing gift cards or transferring funds—verify it in person or via phone first.
- Do not click any links, open attachments, or reply.
- Report it to our IT Helpdesk or forward the message directly to our technology department at cliddicoat@bomusd.org
- Delete the email from your inbox.
